if you're looking for an Independent Living neigborhood for your loved ones, here are a couple of things you would take into:

1. How far is this Independent Living Community from your domicile?

2. Inquire about the level of freedom and activities plan included in the living program. Don't forget, level of caring is most important.

3. Check for the amenities available in the community so that you can know whether it is conforming to your loved ones tastes.

4. Is the amenities and facilities set encourages easier mobility and is in sync with the physical health condition (especially mobility) of your family member?

5. Finally, dining options for residents, housekeeping and cleanliness of the surroundings.

Independent living communities are for those seniors who are capable of taking care of themselves, are able to live without assistance, but generally there is a age restriction in this kind of community,(normally 55)...how ever I personally think that the best place a senior could ever have is their home.

How about outings and assisted shopping services offered by such living communities, my mom is a shopping freak. She always want to go for shopping. Now her caregiver is somehow managing, and at times myself will throw in to accompany her. Our family may decide to move her to a senior housing facility.

thanks for sharing, Helen.I think the first thing to do is assess what  your loved one really needs and then check if the community offers that certain service/s. Carefully have it background checked since there are lots of news about neglect and abuse among nursing homes and ALs

here are other  tips in finding long term care facilities.

even if you are looking for adult day care, independent home living and other facilities it's important to conduct a thorough background check on that company
